With the recent heat wave in New England, many homeowners are switching on their air conditioning units. Hopefully the house begins cooling without a problem. However, for one homeowner in Hudson this wasn’t to be. The unit was turning on and a visual inspection of the outdoor system showed that the fan was running, but the house wasn’t cooling down.

Troubleshooting For Air Conditioning Cooling Problems

One of the top reasons for an inefficiently running air conditioning unit is a dirty air filter. Turning off the unit first, you can find the air filter in the air handler cabinet, accessible from the door on the front. Ice on the coils is a good indicator that there is diminished airflow to the system, and that the air filter is to blame.

Cleaning the interior of the HVAC unit, including the condenser, evaporator, filters and coil, may also improve the air conditioner’s efficiency. Dirt and debris can restrict the air flow, which over time can lead to a damaged compressor from overheating.

Refrigerant Leak To Blame For This Hudson Homeowner

Refrigerant is vital to the operating of an air conditioning unit. A leak can significantly impact the system’s ability to cool the air. The refrigerant’s job is to absorb excess indoor heat, releasing it outside. Not maintaining the unit’s refrigerant on a regular basis can result in small leaks that will affect the unit’s efficiency. The age of the unit may also make it more vulnerable to leaks.

In the case of this Hudson homeowner, his air conditioning unit did have a refrigerant leak. We were able to correct the problem and advise the homeowner to schedule annual check-ups of the unit to prevent this from reoccurring over time.
