Filters

There are several reason why your home’s heating system or furnace may need maintenance. Proper preventive steps can insure the system will operate and not need to be repaired.

Filters for ducted air systems

There are basically 4 types of filters.

1. Fiberglass or foam

Fiberglass and foam filters remove almost no air pollutants from your home. The only reason to use these is to prevent and large debris from getting into the blower. If these are used they should be changed once per month.

2. Pleated

Pleated filters remove about 30% of pollutants from your home. If you existing system has only the space for a 1” filter, this is the best option. If these are used, they should be changed once per month. Be aware that some filters can hamper the airflow so do not use anything higher than a MERV 8

3. Media air cleaners

Media air cleaners are designed to work with any HVAC system. They remove about 85% of pollutants, and are usually changed once per year. The MERV 10 is OK to use with all systems and the MERV 16 should only be used with variable speed.

4. Media/electric

Media/electric are a hybrid using a media air cleaner and some sort of electric cleaner. This can be UV light, electrostatic, or some other means to not only clean the particulates from the air but also VOC’S, mold, mildew, bacteria, and odors. These filter are more expensive to purchase and service but remove 95% of all contaminants.
